Having been built in the 1980’s, the park’s tennis courts recently came to the end of their lifespan and after much consideration, it was decided that they would be upgraded with Playrite’s popular multi-use surface, Matchplay 2.
Although Sutherland Memorial Park is a council-run facility, its courts are regularly hired out to local sports clubs to provide extra revenue.
Due to the high level of usage required by the authority, when it came to selecting a surface Playrite was tasked with providing three tennis courts that were both resilient, robust and also suitable for football.
Although it is highly unusual to see tennis courts hired out for football use, Playrite manufacture a variety of surfaces that cater for multiple ball sports and recommended the company’s Matchplay 2 surface due to its hardwearing, durable nature and suitability for numerous sports.
Matchplay 2 is unique in the fact it allows both tennis and football to be played to a very high standard. The surface can also accommodate netball, basketball and hockey, should the need arise, making it the perfect solution for organisations with limited space or funding.
Cllr Ma Furniss, Lead Councillor for the Environment, said Playrite’s Matchplay 2 will allow the council to continue providing safe, high quality sport facilities for all.
Quernmore Parish covers the largely rural area to the east of Lancaster as far as Jubilee Tower to the east, the river Lune and Caton-with-Littledale to the north and Ellel and Scotforth to the south.
In January 2017, Quernmore Recreation Club contacted Playrite regarding the renovation of its 15-year-old tarmacadam tennis court which had begun to deteriorate.
After establishing the club’s unique requirements, Playrite recommended Matchplay 2 and approved contractor, Surfacing Systems, installed the new surface in two-tone green with line markings for tennis, netball and five-a-side football.
The club also opted for a 10mm shockpad to cushion the activity impact on older member’s joints during play.
The new surface has greatly improved the club aesthetically and feedback from the club’s committee and members has been fantastic.
The club, which dates back to 1906, boasts an excellent range of facilities, including eleven high quality tennis courts, consisting of a variety of surfaces.
Open to members all year round, Four Oaks runs a comprehensive social programme, featuring an exciting calendar of events.
In 2016, Playrite was called upon to help with the installation of a block of Grandplay tennis courts at Four Oaks Tennis club. The project was an outstanding success, with the surface receiving very positive feedback from players regarding its playing characteristics and performance.
So, when the club decided to upgrade a second block of four courts during the summer of 2017, Playrite was again approached by Midland CSB – the contractors involved in the 2016 project – to provide the Club’s new synthetic surfaces.
The successful installation took place in September 2017 and players of all ages have been enjoying the new courts on a daily basis.
Based in Lancaster, Bowerham Tennis club has recently undergone a whole new transformation to their block of four
tennis courts. Playrite was approached by Dorothy Rowley from the tennis club to discuss what options they had in
regards to a new surface. They currently had tarmacadam and wanted to upgrade the level of play they could currently offer.
Ken Smith of Playrite visited and presented Matchplay 2 to the club, which is a very durable and hard-wearing surface that gives endless hours of consistent play.
Ken then referred the enquiry to Outdoor Carpets to provide a quotation to carry out the installation if they decided to go ahead. Colin Lloyd visited and met with Dorothy which then led to a decision being made in September and the courts installed in November.
Once the installation was complete, Ken met with a few members in July 2018 and asked for comments on the new courts. This is what they said, “Love this surface (Matchplay 2) as the ball reacts well and you get a good game – soft on the feet too!”
The school truly want the best for their pupils, so when Head Teacher, Nick Copestick, got in touch looking to upgrade the school’s tired macadam surface we were only too happy to spend time helping him select a product to meet their unique sporting requirements.
The school’s new surface was required to be low maintenance, suitable for a wide variety of sports and manufactured in the UK, making Matchplay 2 the obvious choice.
Another influencing decision for the school was the fact the surface would be installed by local team, Bradley Surfacing Systems, who could be on hand at short notice.
The new surface, which is being used on a daily basis, has extended and enhanced the range of outdoor play facilities available to pupils.
There are so many things to consider when choosing a new synthetic sports surface. Durability, performance, maintenance; It can get confusing and becomes very easy to make a wrong decision.
Playrite try to guide their customers into choosing the best surface for their requirements, which is what we did when Head Teacher, Nick Copestick, contacted us to upgrade their tired macadam sports surface.
Mr Copestick is Head Teacher at Edenhurst Preparatory School, Newcastle Under Lyme, the school focus their main ethos on nurturing, inspiring and helping the students achieve. They want the best for the pupils and were very keen to introduce a new surface for their sporting requirements.
The surface needed to cover a wide variety of sports to be played on and yet low maintenance. Our Matchplay 2 was the obvious choice although Mr Copestick required convincing by our Rob Rhodes who demonstrated the unique playing characteristics along with all the benefits that Matchplay 2 has to offer in a high level sports surface including it’s low maintenance appeal.
Bradley Surfacing Systems were then introduced to Mr Copestick, who work alongside Playrite on a number of projects carrying out the installation through to completion in Autumn 2016.
Having recently received an update from the school who confirmed the facility is being used on a daily basis and that the new surface has added an extra dimension to the range of external facilities that they are now able to offer to their pupils and Matchplay 2 has been a great benefit in enhancing the schools outdoor play facilities.
One of Mr Copestick’s influencing decisions was the fact he could source the surface from a UK manufacturer and knowing the installation team are so local and can be on hand at short notice.
Another great example of MADE IN BRITAIN.
With a large proportion of elderly members playing at Odney Tennis Club every week, when it came to refurbishing three of it’s courts, comfort was a top priority!
Playrite offered the club a variety of suggestions and samples and after much consultation, they decided Matchplay2 was the perfect solution.
Matchplay 2 offers great stability, along with a built in cushioned layer that provides protection for ankle and leg joints, maximising playing time specifically for older members. The pace of the surface also provides added benefits when playing rallies or throughout coaching sessions,
Requiring just 8kg of sand per m2, Matchplay 2 also requires minimal maintenance, and is an ideal solution when budgets are tight or when it is not possible to overlay the original surfaces with more conventional products.
Nick Baker from Odney Tennis Club commented: “Playrite offered suggestions and various samples were considered. We chose the Matchplay 2 surface after much consultation with our club players and we are delighted that we did.
Mr Baker also commented on how the surface can be used in all-weather conditions, increasing playing time dramatically. He said: “They play just as well after rain as in the dry and everyone who has used the courts has enthused about what a great improvement they are. I would have no hesitation in recommending Playrite’s Matchplay 2 tennis surface”.
It is hoped the new comfortable Playrite courts will attract even more members to the club.
Located in the beautiful open countryside of Okehampton, Devon, The Manor House Hotel and Ashbury Golf Hotel, are the UK’s largest golf resort and leading provider of sport, craft , leisure and Spa activities for the whole family.
Playrite was approached by the Hotel during early 2017 to discuss an ambitious project to create a full size 3G pitch suitable for Football and Rugby.
The scale of the project involved significant private investment by the hotel and confirmed the company’s desire to provide continued five-star sports facilities in an hotel environment.
After working closely with the client over a period of months to find the best solution, Playrite’s Conqueror 60MP – 60mm 3G Surface was selected for the project.
Playrite Conqueror 60MP Monofilament Tufted Synthetic Grass is certified by the sports governing bodies for Football and Rugby use, satisfying criteria outlined by the client.
Over a period of several months, from mid to late 2017, the hotels experienced in- house team were able to construct the full size facility and install over 7000 Square Metres of Playrite Conqueror 60MP – 3G Surface for the start of the 2018 guest season.
The facility is now fully operational and is being enjoyed on a daily basis by guests, sports clubs, local football teams and schools from around the area, benefiting both the hotel and local community.

Snitterfield Tennis Club is a small club situated in the heart of Warwickshire and is located approximately four miles from both Stratf ord upon Avon and Warwick.
The club is part of the Snitterfield sports club and is represented in local tennis leagues. The club offers coaching for all age groups and abilities.
It has three floodlit courts, two of which had previously been surfaced with Playrite’s Matchplay 2 ITF category 3 pace rated sand-dressed synthetic surface.
At the turn of the year, the club made a decision, due to the popularity and playing demand on the existing Matchplay 2 Courts, to upgrade the remaining hard court to the same
surface.
The high-performance hard-wearing nature coupled with the low maintenance aspect of the surface was key to the clubs’ decision to once again choose Matchplay 2.
Fosse Contracts Ltd, whom Playrite have worked with on numerous tennis projects over a number of years, were chosen as the contractor and the new Playrite Matchplay 2 surface was installed in April 2018 in a two tone green colour scheme to compliment the other courts.
All three Matchplay 2 courts are floodlit and open for use and team hire all year round.
